In Italian most words ending in -a are feminine, instead most words ending in -o are masculine. Even if this happens in most cases, this grammar rule isn’t always true.
There are some feminine words ending in -o (for example radio) and some masculine words ending in -a (for example problema).

Singular and plural of some words
Another frequent mistake is the plural of some Italian words. The common rule is that the plural of words ending in -a ends in -e, instead the plural of words ending in -o ends in -i.
However you need to know that there are some exceptions, for example the plural of the word uomo (man) ends in -i but it’s uomini (men) and not uomi!
Qualche volte it’s not correct!
Some students say qualche volte when they want to translate sometimes. This is a mistake because in Italian you have to say qualche volta, you have to use singular. You can use the plural saying a volte, that can be considered a synonymous of the first expression.
The sentence I play football sometimes can be translated with Io gioco a calcio qualche volta or with Io gioco a calcio a volte.
