Among the monuments which fill Rome, one of the most important and famous, without any doubt, is the Pantheon: a Roman building which was built between A.D 118 and 125 and was requested by the emperor Hadrian.
Actually, in the ancient times, it was a Roman temple dedicated to all the gods of pagan Rome, but was destroyed by a big fire. In A.D 609 the Pantheon was consecrated as a Christian church. When you enter, you are immediately wrapped in a particular structure of the building: it is a singular and circular room covered by a huge immense dome. It is quite impossible not to see the big opening in the dome which illuminates the interior of the building. In the sunshine, this sky light lets in a majestic light, leaving us totally enraptured. On the contrary, if it rains, it is amazing to observe how the ingenuity of the ancient Romans has found such peculiar and intelligent solutions: the rainwater, infact, is being collected by 22 tiny holes settled strategically in the floor! But it is worth visiting the Pantheon not only for the beauty of its structure but also for the tomb of Raffaello Sanzio, the great artist of the Renaissance.
The Pantheon gives rest to the remains of the kings Umberto I, Margherita of Savoy and Vittorio Emanuele II, because the Pantheon has become the memorial of the kings of Italy. In conclusion, the Pantheon is a monument which one cannot miss out on and it is situated close to an area of other places of interest, such as Piazza Navona and the church of St. Louis of the French, which is famous for its paintings by Caravaggio.
