Bocca della verità: Truth or Legend? Find out in Rome!

Blog Article Bocca della verità while studying Italian in rome

Rome is brimming with monuments and attractions that leave visitors breathless. Among the must-see sights, the ancient mask known as the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) is a standout. Located on the exterior wall of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Bocca della Verità has become a global tourist icon thanks to the 1953 film ‘Roman Holiday’ starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. However, this monument’s history predates the film, dating back to Roman times, though it was only placed in its current location in 1632.

Various theories exist about the mask’s original purpose. Some believe it was an ancient drain, explaining its unique appearance: a bearded face with an open mouth (perhaps representing an ancient river deity swallowing water). Others suggest it covered a sacred well within the Temple of Mercury.

A particularly captivating legend claims the Bocca della Verità could expose liars. The story goes that ancient merchants would place their hands in the mouth to prove their honesty before making deals. If someone was caught in a lie, it was said that a hidden person behind the mask would bite off their hand. This legend gave the mask its name and continues to draw countless tourists who eagerly line up to test their honesty.
