What is Grattachecca? If you can imagine a shaved ice dessert,except with an extensive history and interesting creation. In fact, its name, grattachecca means “shaved ice”! Checche, large blocks of ice, used to be scraped with an stoners in the old days. The shaved type obviously refers to the use of ice that was frozen in blocks which were then shaven down and topped with flavored syrups, or fruit juices.

While both are cold, icy desserts, granita is made by freezing a mixture of water and flavoring, resulting in a more slushy texture. Grattachecca, on the other hand, is made by shaving ice from a solid block, giving it a more granular texture.
