Scratching Rome’s surface

Blog ArticleCover learning about Rome : sampietrini

Now that my Italian language class at Clidante school has just started, I am beginning to form habits in order to familiarize myself with Rome. I would like to be able to explore the city confidently, but even now I still enjoy getting lost and observing the beauty and colors in every area. In fact although Rome is an ancient town and is rich in history, you can breathe its freshness and its newness everywhere. Every block is lined with century-old buildings, and every street contains such a deep, rich history and the desire to explore the nooks of the city is ubiquitous. Elegance is part of this charismatic city and I am so grateful to be able to experience it in such depth during these four weeks of my stay! My cell phone’s camera is almost full of pics and I need to download it very soon. I don’t want to lose any detail of my stay!

The essence of Rome is not something that explodes suddenly when you first step into the city; it’s something rather comfortable and inviting, something that caresses you and that slips effortlessly into your perspective. I really enjoy walking on the dark gray cobblestones (I am told that in Rome they are called “sampietrini”) through the alleyways of Monti, one of the nightlife districts. I also have discovered how beautiful the yellow light of the sunset is, crossing the Cestius bridge and Tiberina island. And did you know that Trastevere (one of the oldest and characteristic parts of the city) means “beyond the Tiber river”?

Studying Italian language and culture at Clidante school and, at the same time, living in this wonderful city is a great experience for me. It’s full of unforgettable moments! I look forward to making even more discoveries because I know I only have scratched the surface of this exuberant and intriguing city.
